Armies of sopranos and tenors have passed through the virtual city that Franco Zeffirelli constructed for Puccini’s “La Bohème.” No one would argue that it’s not a better evening with Pavarotti — or, last week, the rising star Michael Fabiano. The point is that it’s going to be a spectacle, even if the talent is spottier.

Richard Jones’s surreal, macabre staging of Humperdinck’s glorious “Hansel and Gretel,” revived on Thursday evening in English as the Met’s annual family holiday offering, is neither particularly grand, in the Zeffirelli sense, nor conventionally pretty. But its atmosphere is so arresting, and certain of its images so haunting, that it would enchant and move you even if you pressed the mute button. It’s singer-proof.

Happily, on Thursday it didn’t have to be. A capable, appealing cast added to the production’s darkly antic effect. The mezzo-soprano Christine Rice appeared in concert with the Met Orchestra in 2011, but was making her house debut as Hansel. It followed another recent trouser (or at least semi-trouser) role for her, Bradamante in Handel’s “Alcina,” with the English Concert chamber orchestra at Carnegie Hall. In both parts, her voice has been bright and lean, her diction crisp and energetic.

Her Gretel was the soprano Aleksandra Kurzak, a veteran of this production whose slender tone has lately gotten subtly fuller, her range’s center of gravity lower. The colors of their voices are similar enough that the great “Evening Prayer” duet was more like a mirror than a blend. Their chemistry delightful, Ms. Rice and Ms. Kurzak danced, crept and cowered with ease, radiating sweetness without ever tipping over into sentimentality.

Mr. Jones’s production, set perhaps in mid-20th-century England, certainly steers clear of schmaltz. We are constantly reminded that this is an opera about two poor, hungry children. Their cottage is drab rather than cozy, and the second act takes place not in a forest but in a drafty abandoned ballroom. The Witch’s gingerbread house is here a cavernous industrial kitchen.

The writing of the screenplay began in around 2009 and Kent has stated that she sought to tell a story about facing up to the darkness with ourselves, the "fear of going mad" and an exploration of parenting from a "real perspective". In regard to parenting, Kent further explained in October 2014: "Now, I’m not saying we all want to go and kill our kids, but a lot of women struggle. And it is a very taboo subject, to say that motherhood is anything but a perfect experience for women."[6] In terms of the characters, Kent said that it was important that both characters are loving and lovable, so that "we [audience] really feel for them"—Kent wanted to portray human relationships in a positive light.[6] In total, Kent completed five drafts of the script.[9]

To attain the funds for the sets, Kent and Causeway Films producer Kristina Ceyton launched a Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign in June 2012, with a target of US$30,000. Their funding goal was reached on 27 September 2012 through pledges from 259 backers

On that score, Moore’s Coin unsurprisingly emerges as the ensemble’s MVP, her steely intelligence and no-nonsense leadership marking her as yet another manifestation of the franchise’s refreshing gender politics, even as the film slyly encourages us not to judge her or her subordinates by the apparent righteousness of their cause. That power cannot help but corrupt is among Collins’ more potent themes (hinted at here in shots of a District 13 rally that can’t help but evoke “Triumph of the Will”), but one likely to be explored in greater depth — and ideally, with a freer hand — when “Mockingjay — Part 2″ arrives at this time next year.

The third of four films in the successful and admirable Hunger Games series is any number of good things: intense, stylish, topical, well-acted. But the one thing it could never be called is satisfying.

Suzanne Collins’s original Mockingjay novel, the final instalment in her bestselling young-adult trilogy, runs to 27 chapters plus epilogue. Francis Lawrence’s film takes us a page or so into chapter 13, which is just around the point that the subterranean scheming eases off and things actually start to happen.

As you watch, you can feel a franchise being eked out to squeaking point: like the two-part conclusions to the Harry Potter and Twilight series, this feels like a business decision rather than a creative one. Only the most uncritical fans, for whom more will always unquestionably be better, could possibly be at peace with two hours of preamble with no discernible payoff.

She has the aspirations of becoming the next Nina Simone, but she’s taken the easy road to stardom through pop music and sleazy objectification — a legitimate and tangible issue that continues to plague today’s music industry. Early in the film, the depressed singer tries to commit suicide following an awards show by jumping off the balcony of her L.A. hotel room. Naturally, Kaz is on the scene, saves the day, and is vaunted as a hero, as the media spins the story into a drunken accident. Soon after, the two care for each other, and are tested by commitments (family, duty, executives, constituents, so much drama for these two). From there it’s obvious: a daring rescue, a whirlwind romance, and you should stop giggling now.

Despite this Hallmark-grade premise, Gina Prince-Bythewood’s Beyond the Lights is a tender, mindful, and soulful film that offers a modern take on a stale romance, all on the strength of two attractive yet sympathetic leads. The musical Romeo and Juliet-style drama is very specifically West Coast industry-based, with shades of Sofia Coppola, Dreamgirls, and again, The Bodyguard. However, it marches to a different tune. Kaz may be a hunky savior, but it’s consensually intimate, lacking in the usual alpha male crap. Maybe he’s amusingly sensitive, but he cares. Noni, on the other hand, commits to the “maligned artist desperate to break free” cliche.

But “Dumb and Dumber,” which presented itself as an invigorating blast of odorous fun, earned its laughs partly because it didn’t soften its no-frills absurdity and heartburning guff about life being a box of chocolates. Mostly, it delighted by giving Mr. Carrey, after his “Ace Ventura” success, the chance to run wild with his rubber-band physiognomy and gift for squirming comedy. (Few comics can shove a laugh back down an audience’s throat as quickly.) Both he and Mr. Daniels have slowed down without cleaning up their act.

To that end, as it were, this sequel is just, uh, packed, or perhaps smeared, with a whole lot of poop jokes. There are diaper gags, lots of them, mostly pretty funny, and a couple of peekaboo looks at a feline rear end. That same puss ends up swinging from a chandelier, which in another movie might be the center of an elaborately staged set but here feels like an easy throwaway. The Farrellys are still not much interested in film as a visual medium, and when Lloyd and Harry aren’t smacking each other or dropping their pants, you might as well be listening to a radio play. There’s a story, but it doesn’t matter, certainly not to the leads or the good-natured sidekicks like Kathleen Turner and Rob Riggle.
